About the museum
The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría traces its origins to the Academia Sevillana del Arte de Pintura, founded in 1660, which ceased in 1690. It was re-founded in 1759 as the School of the Three Noble Arts and in 1827 regained academy status under its current name. It was based in the former convent of La Merced, now the Museo de Bellas Artes, until 1980, when it moved to the Casa de los Pinelo, which it shares with the Real Academia Sevillana de Buenas Letras.
The house was built in the first third of the 16th century for the canon Diego Pinelo, of Genoese origin, and is one of the first Renaissance noble houses in Seville, with Renaissance and Mudéjar features. It was home to cathedral canons until the 19th-century disentailments, and afterwards served as a school, carriage store, printing works, offices of the Monte de Piedad and a hotel. In 1966 it passed to Seville City Council, and it has been listed as a monument since 1954.
