About the museum

The Museo del Baile Flamenco opened on 7 April 2006 on the initiative of the Seville dancer Cristina Hoyos. It occupies an 18th-century building in the Santa Cruz quarter, renovated before opening, with a Sevillian patio in the Écija style on the ground floor and a basement that preserves a 12th-century Arab vault in the foundations of the house.

The museum is spread over four floors. An interactive route, available in thirteen languages, explains the origins, styles and evolution of flamenco dance and recalls figures such as Carmen Amaya, Antonio Gades, Mario Maya or Cristina Hoyos herself. Other rooms house an art gallery with exhibitions of painting, photography and sculpture related to flamenco, and a permanent photographic gallery devoted to the work of Cristina Hoyos.

Besides the visit, the house programmes daily flamenco shows in the courtyard and in the basement vault, as well as courses, talks and cultural activities.
