La Geoda de Pulpí

Mina Rica in Pulpí, 50 metres deep, home to the largest gypsum-crystal geode in the world open to visitors; visits are always with a guide.

Opening hoursAdmission €25

About the museum

In December 1999, members of the Grupo Mineralogista de Madrid discovered the Geoda de Pulpí in the Mina Rica. It is a cavity about 8 metres long and 2 metres high, lined with selenite gypsum crystals, some almost 2 metres long, notable for their transparency and good state of preservation.

The Sierra del Aguilón was mined for a long time. Modern mining began in 1840 with the extraction of silver-bearing galena, and from 1870 it focused on iron, to the point that Jaravia became one of the most important mining districts in Spain. The mines were abandoned after the Civil War.

Twenty years after the discovery, the project to reopen the Mina Rica and allow public visits began. The visit, always guided, descends 164 steps and passes through 19th-century galleries with small geodes, faults and other formations, while the guide explains the mining history, the geology of the mine and the origin of the geode.
