About the museum
The Museo del Ferrocarril de Águilas opened in 1985 on the ground floor of the railway station, on the initiative of the railway enthusiasts’ club “El Labradorcico”, which still runs it. In the 19th century the premises served as the archive and strongroom of the British company Great Southern of Spain Railway Company; the strongroom’s iron armoured door still works and forms part of the visit.
The main room, with thick brick walls and a vaulted ceiling, holds photographs and objects from the history of the Lorca–Baza–Águilas line, models of railway installations such as the Embarcadero del Hornillo, and a large model train that runs while the museum is open. The line and the pier were built to export minerals through the port of Águilas.
