About the museum

About 150 million years ago, the Albarracín mountain range was covered by the Tethys Sea, the forerunner of the Mediterranean. Mar Nummus, one of the venues of the Territorio Dinópolis network, explains this marine past and how a fossil forms, the tool with which palaeontologists study the life of millions of years ago.

The centre was built on a 5,000 m² plot in the Casagrande area, reached through the Arrabal quarter. The building has about 256 m² of floor space, with an exhibition hall as its main space, service areas, children's play equipment and outdoor parking. On the roof sits a life-size replica of a Liopleurodon, a large Jurassic marine reptile. The work, worth about €900,000, was financed by the Instituto Aragonés de Fomento (Aragonese Development Institute).

The exhibition brings together marine fossils such as crocodiles, sponges, brachiopods, ammonites, bivalves, gastropods and echinoderms, including Albarracinites albarracinensis, an ammonite species found in Albarracín.
