About the museum
The Museo de Arte Sacro de Teruel opened in 1984 on the initiative of Bishop Damián Iguacén Borau and occupies the Episcopal Palace, a building begun at the end of the 16th century and completed in the 18th century. The museum was renovated in 2021.
Its holdings come from several sources: works from small churches in the depopulated villages of the diocese of Teruel and Albarracín, pieces deposited by the city's parishes, donations from convents that have closed in recent years and part of the artistic heritage of the Cathedral of Santa María. To these are added contemporary works with spiritual themes.
The collection brings together Gothic painting, miniatures, sculpture, goldsmithing and sacred books. Among the most notable pieces are a mid-15th-century panel of the Virgen del Patrocinio (Our Lady of Patronage) and a 17th-century ivory, the “Cristo árbol de la vida” (Christ, Tree of Life).
