About the museum
The Museo de Albarracín occupies the city's former hospital, a square-plan building commissioned by Bishop Francisco Navarro y Gilaberte and dated 1789 on the coat of arms on the façade. It operated as a hospital for only a short time; afterwards it was used as a district prison, as housing and as a municipal warehouse. It was restored at the end of the 20th century and opened in 1990 as a municipal museum.
Its collection grew out of the excavations of the Albarracín castle, which yielded hundreds of thousands of archaeological fragments. The restoration of the most important pieces formed the permanent collection, with one of the most varied displays of Islamic-period material in the country: ceramics, metalwork, goldsmithing and bone objects.
The route begins on the ground floor, with rooms on the setting of Albarracín and the first human settlements, as well as two temporary exhibition rooms. The first floor is devoted to the Middle Ages, with pieces from the castle and the city's charter (fuero), an original 13th-century document. The bajocubierta (the attic space under the roof), a large open hall beneath the timber roof structure, traces the history of Albarracín between the 16th and 20th centuries.
