About the museum

The Museo de Teruel, also known as the Museo Provincial, occupies the Casa de la Comunidad, a Renaissance stone building constructed at the end of the 16th century, which was the seat of the community of villages of Teruel. From 1837 it housed various institutions, including the Provincial Council and a secondary school. The city of Teruel bought the building in 1973 to install the museum there, and in 1974 it was declared a national monument of historic and artistic interest.

The museum was created in 1956 mainly to store the archaeological finds of the province and was previously housed in the Casa de la Cultura. It opened in its current premises on 2 March 1987 and has focused on collections of ethnography, prehistory and archaeology. Over time, a section on popular arts and customs and a toy museum were added.

The route runs from the bottom up. In the former stables is the ethnography section, arranged by activity. The ground floor is devoted to temporary exhibitions, the first floor displays the collection of decorated Teruel ceramics from the 13th to the 20th centuries, the second floor holds archaeological material from the Palaeolithic to the Early Iron Age, the third floor is dedicated to the Iberian period, and the fourth to the Roman and medieval periods, with a 4th-century mosaic.
