About the museum
Món Casteller is the Museu Casteller de Catalunya, devoted to the castells, the human towers that UNESCO recognises as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It opened in September 2023 in the old town of Valls, the city where this tradition originated about two hundred years ago, next to the plaza del Blat.
The building, designed by the architect Dani Freixes, covers around 2,900 square metres over four floors and is organised around a large circular courtyard. The project was promoted by Valls city council, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Diputación de Tarragona (provincial council) and the Coordinadora de Colles Castelleres de Catalunya.
The permanent exhibition is conceived as an immersive experience in three acts that revolve around the values of the castells world: courage, good sense and balance, and strength. The museum presents itself as an open centre for interpreting the castells phenomenon, designed also for those who have never taken part in a human tower, and as a platform for making this intangible heritage known.
Highlights
- Immersive experience in three acts: courage, good sense and balance, and strength
- Simulation of the dizzying climb of an anxaneta (the child who climbs to the top) of a castell
- History, technique and music of the castells, explained in the “pinyes” (the bases of the towers)
- Dani Freixes building around a circular courtyard
- Enxaneta 360º Experience as a complement to the visit
Permanent exhibition
- Exposición permanente en tres actos – Immersive experience in three acts (courage, good sense and balance, and strength) on the castells, with a simulation of the anxaneta's climb, a space on history, technique and music, and a sensory finale.
