About the museum
The town of Valls had wanted a museum since 1909, and the museum finally opened in 1954 in the rooms of the old castle, in the Plaza del Pati, with paintings from donations and archaeological material. Donations from private collections soon made that space insufficient, and the Ministry of Culture chose to build a Casa de Cultura that would include the museum. The town council ceded the land to the State in 1965, and the new building, at the top of the Paseo dels Caputxins, opened its doors in 1970.
In 1988 the museum closed for works and reopened in 1993 with a new museological and museographic project that established it as a reference for 20th-century Catalan art. Since then it has programmed more than 150 temporary exhibitions, most of them produced from its own holdings, to champion the artists of Valls and to make figures of national and international importance better known.
In 2022 the museum was extended, which made it possible to display the holdings in a permanent collection and to gain space for activities. Today it holds more than 5,000 pieces, including the most complete 20th-century painting collection in the comarques of Tarragona and an archaeological collection focused on the Iberian and Roman periods, from the sites of El Vilar and the Fontscaldes kiln. It also receives objects from the excavations in the Alt Camp. It forms part of the Xarxa de Museus d'Art and the Xarxa de Museus de Tarragona i les Terres de l'Ebre.
