About the museum

The Museu d’Alcover is an autonomous body run by a municipal board of trustees and has been entered in the museum register of the Generalitat de Catalunya since 2014. Its mission is to generate and share knowledge about the diversity and evolution of the natural world and of society, with the aim of universal accessibility. It is based in Ca Batistó, a house in Alcover's old town that once belonged to a well-to-do family.

The collections comprise some 12,000 objects from very different fields, such as ethnology, palaeontology and archaeology. The palaeontology collection, the best documented, exceeds 2,000 fossils, around 400 of them from the Triassic site of Alcover-Mont-ral; close to 900 specimens from this site are also held by the Museu de Geologia del Seminari de Barcelona. The museum collaborates on research with the Centre d’Història Natural de la Conca de Barberà and the Institut Català de Paleontologia.

The exhibition “Triàsic, explosió de vida” presents the remains from the site, a former deep, oxygen-free and very salty lagoon that preserved the animals in exceptional detail. In Ca Batistó, the exhibition “Ca Batistó, modernitat burgesa” shows how the well-to-do homes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were the first to modernise. The museum completes its offer with the MiMo space, dedicated to the Glorieta river valley, and the Ruta Bandolera through the old town.
