About the museum

The Museo de la Universidad de Alicante (MUA) was founded in 1999 on the San Vicente del Raspeig campus as a pioneering project among Spanish university museums. Its building, designed by the architect Alfredo Payá, was conceived as a large timber box beside an artificial lake. Its programme is based on alternating temporary exhibitions of a scientific, artistic and heritage character.

The collection brings together some 2,500 works of contemporary art from the second half of the 20th century and the 21st century, by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Eduardo Chillida, Eusebio Sempere and Arcadio Blasco. Highlights include the graphic-art holdings of Sempere and the architectural photography of Julius Shulman. Since 2005 a permanent room for the collection has existed. For reasons of space and conservation, it is renewed periodically according to thematic and educational criteria.

Each season the museum organises around twenty temporary exhibitions and a broad programme of activities: guided tours, educational workshops for schoolchildren, concerts, lectures and activities for families. It also has a cultural information point and a library with exhibition catalogues and publications on art.
