About the museum

The Museo Ampelográfico is on the El Encín estate in Alcalá de Henares, an experimental farm of the Madrid Institute for Rural, Agricultural and Food Research and Development (IMIDRA). It opened in 2003 as a botanical garden specialising in vines of Spanish origin.

It has a circular layout with a central pergola and four concentric rings of vines, and displays more than two hundred varieties, including those used in the Vinos de Madrid designation of origin, rootstocks, hybrids and foreign varieties, mainly French.

The museum is part of the El Encín Grapevine Variety Collection, one of the largest in Europe. Its origins go back to the late 19th century, when genetic material that phylloxera was destroying began to be conserved, and in 1950 it was moved to the present estate.
