About the museum

The Museo de Arte Iberoamericano of the University of Alcalá (MAI) opened in 2016 and reopened in 2020. It is on the ground floor of the Edificio Cisneros, the former Cuartel del Príncipe, on the Plaza de San Diego, next to the Rectorate, and has become a new focus of cultural attraction in the city. The building combines remains of the 15th-century Franciscan convent of Santa María de Jesús with industrial-style technical elements from the 1970s.

Its more than 1,300 m² are divided into two L-shaped rooms, which allow different exhibition narratives to be presented without getting in each other's way. The first room is dedicated to the Ibero-American art collection of the José Félix Llopis Foundation, which the University holds on deposit and which ranges from pre-Columbian pieces to contemporary art, including colonial Cuzco painting and the Ibero-American avant-garde.

The second room shows the holdings of the Luis González Robles Museum, owned by the University: a broad survey of Spanish and Ibero-American art of the second half of the 20th century, assembled by this patron and curator. Given its size, the space also hosts lectures, small-scale concerts, workshops and other cultural activities.
