About the museum
The museum of the University of Alcalá opened in June 2021, thanks to the donation in 2019 of the collection of objects and documents relating to printing by the businessman and collector Ángel Gallego Esteban. It pays tribute to the printer’s craft and recalls Alcalá de Henares’ long association with printing, which goes back to the time of Cardinal Cisneros and the Biblia Políglota (Complutensian Polyglot Bible).
The exhibition traces the evolution of the graphic arts, from Gutenberg’s movable-type press to contemporary techniques, and shows how printing contributed to social progress. The museum is temporarily housed in the Faculty of Law, the former Colegio Máximo de la Compañía de Jesús (Jesuit college), and is due to be moved to a future extension of the Edificio Cisneros.
Visits are guided and must be booked at least 24 hours in advance.
