About the museum
The Benahoarita Archaeological Museum was created and opened in 2007 and belongs to the Cabildo Insular de La Palma, which also runs it. It occupies a modern circular building with three floors and some 2,900 m², located in the town centre of Los Llanos de Aridane, on Calle Las Adelfas.
The permanent exhibition is devoted to the Benahoarita, the Aboriginal population of La Palma before its incorporation into the Crown of Castile at the end of the 15th century. Through various displays, it shows their habitat, their industries, their use of the environment and their magical-religious beliefs. The building also includes a temporary exhibition room, an auditorium and a craft shop.
The museum is also a centre of work and research: its staff restore Aboriginal pieces, facilitate the study of basketry and cordage remains, collaborate with volcanology specialists and host researchers. In 2024 the Cabildo improved its surroundings with a stone wall, in order to enlarge the square and create new parking spaces.
