Museo de Arte Sacro de Los Llanos de Aridane

Parish museum in Los Llanos de Aridane with American silverwork, liturgical textiles and statues from the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios.

Opening hours

About the museum

The museum opened on 2 July 1978 on the initiative of the parish priest Marino Sicilia González, and was the first of its kind on La Palma. It belongs to the Parroquia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, the main church of Los Llanos de Aridane.

Since 2006 it has occupied the so-called Casa de la Iglesia, a 16th-century building on Plaza Elías Santos Abreu, behind the church. The house originally served the chaplaincy of the dawn Mass (misa de alba), and was later acquired and restored by the parish. In December 2013 the museum reopened after an update that added a textiles section. On 21 December 2024 it reopened to the public thanks to the work of a group of local residents who recovered and arranged the collection.

The collection is notable for its American silverwork, much of it from the Yucatán Peninsula, including chalices, monstrances and crosses, some from the 17th century. Singular pieces include an 18th-century Mexican sacramental banner of velvet with silver appliqués, preserved in its original case, and the so-called Palio de Manila, a piece of Asian origin. The museum also holds images, such as a Saint Joseph with the Child, and textiles: chasubles and dalmatics embroidered in silk and gold, spanning more than three centuries, and garments for devotional statues.
