About the museum
The Museo del Plátano opened in 2004 in El Charco, the historic centre of Tazacorte. It occupies a two-storey Canarian house surrounded by banana plants (plataneras), and presents itself as the only museum in Europe dedicated to banana cultivation, a crop that has shaped the identity and economy of the municipality since the 19th century.
On the upper floor, numerous information panels with texts and photographs explain the origin of the fruit, its dietary qualities, the process of harvesting and packing, the pests that affect it, the varieties, transport from the Canary Islands to the rest of the world, and the history the crop has witnessed. The ground floor has a multipurpose room, and next to the museum stretches the Plaza del Museo del Plátano, with a garden where different types of banana plants can be seen.
Tazacorte town council complements the in-person visit with virtual museums covering the history of the banana, cultivation and the estate (finca), the progression from cutting to packing, the relationship of the banana with the sea and the port, and banana culture. The Museo del Mojo is a few metres away.
