About the museum
The project was launched in 1999, when Los Llanos de Aridane was celebrating the centenary of its town status (1899–1999). The idea was to use the party walls of the centre's buildings as a support for contemporary works of art, so that the town itself would become an exhibition space. The first pieces were installed between May and June 2000.
The first works were paintings on wooden boards, a format that makes them easier to conserve, move and restore. From 2008 the collection increasingly included photographs and, later, large-format murals. Artists represented include Ceesepe, Ouka Leele, Chema Madoz, Andrés Rábago, Hugo Pitti, Luis Mayo and the collective Boa Mistura. In 2025, for its 25th anniversary, the mural “Un día en Los Llanos” by the French artist 3TTMan, measuring 90 square metres, was added in front of the Estación de guaguas (bus station).
The Los Llanos de Aridane town council runs the project through its Concejalía de Cultura (culture department). In 2021 the municipal plenary approved its recognition as a museum under the Canarian heritage legislation. The initiative has been taken to other cities in Africa and Latin America, such as Maputo, Quito, Bata and Asunción, as well as to Fort-de-France, in Martinica.
