About the museum

Andelos was a Roman city of pre-Roman origin, preceded by an earlier Iron Age settlement. It is mentioned as early as the time of the foundation of Pompaelo (Pamplona), in the 2nd century BC, and it reached its height between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, when it had some 2,500 inhabitants. It lay at a crossroads of routes between present-day Jaca, Logroño and Pamplona.

The site is notable for its water supply system, of which remains survive of a dam, a regulating reservoir, an aqueduct, a castellum aquae (distribution tank), a fountain or nymphaeum and baths. Next to the entrance is the Museo Arqueológico de Andelos, which displays finds from the excavations, such as mosaics, pottery and inscriptions, and explains the water network and the urban layout.

Visits to the site are guided, with tickets sold online, and are managed by Magma Cultura with the support of the Government of Navarre. Every year, at the end of June, Mendigorría also holds a Roman festival at the site.
