About the museum
The Government of Navarre created the museum in 1994 to collect and study the ethnological heritage of the region. Its first home was the monastery of Santa María la Real de Irache, in Ayegui, and in 1995 it was named after Julio Caro Baroja, one of the great researchers of Navarrese culture.
The museum project planned for that building was never carried out and, after the monastery was transferred to the State to become a parador (state-run hotel), the collections were moved in 2007 to a temporary storeroom in Estella, where they remain while a permanent venue is being prepared.
The museum currently has no regularly open exhibition. It conserves, documents and disseminates its collections, maintains a specialised library open to the public and organises free guided visits on special dates.
