About the museum
The Roman villa of Las Musas is a site dating from the 1st to 5th centuries AD, which was occupied over several phases. Its Latin name, fundus Aurelianus, lies behind the place name Arellano. The first records date from 1882, when the Muses mosaic was unearthed while a vineyard was being planted; it is now kept in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional.
Blas Taracena carried out soundings in 1942, and systematic excavations began in 1988. They uncovered a large wine cellar (cella vinaria) with numerous dolia, a system of wine presses, a lararium and, in the late phase, a residential area with a reception room, a bedroom, a musaeum and an enclosure dedicated to Cibeles (Cybele).
The Government of Navarre turned the site into a museum with a protective building covering the remains, restoration of the mosaics and building elements, and explanatory panels; it was inaugurated in March 2008. The villa is part of the Red Nacional de Villas Romanas de Hispania (National Network of Roman Villas of Hispania) and is visited with a guide.
