About the museum
The Museo de la Trufa, also called the Ecomuseo de la Trufa y Centro de Interpretación de Metauten, occupies a modern building in Metauten, at the foot of the Sierra de Santiago de Lokiz, in the Navarrese region of Tierra Estella. It presents itself as the only interpretation centre in Spain devoted entirely to the truffle.
Its purpose is to explain the black truffle (Tuber melanosporum), which grows naturally in the Metauten-Allín valley, together with its history, its surroundings, the biodiversity it depends on and its value in gastronomy. Truffles have also been cultivated in the area for some years, because the soil and climate meet the requirements of truffle farming.
The exhibition is laid out in a large room with groups of information panels in Spanish and Basque, multimedia projections and interactive elements. The visit is completed by an audiovisual on the journey of the truffle from harvest to table, a permanent photography exhibition of landscapes by the Navarrese photographer Antonio Goñi Aramendía, a shop selling truffle products, and a glazed room, the Ventana de Lokiz, where local produce is tasted.
