About the museum
The Museo Gustavo de Maeztu opened its doors in June 1991. The collection, made up of the works that the painter Gustavo de Maeztu (Vitoria, 1887 – Estella, 1947) bequeathed to the city, belongs to the Ayuntamiento de Estella-Lizarra, which runs the museum, while the Government of Navarre provides the building under an agreement signed that same year.
The venue is the so-called palace of the Dukes of Granada de Ega, regarded as the finest example of civil Romanesque architecture in Navarre. It stands next to the church of San Pedro de la Rúa, on the Camino de Santiago, and its original function is debated: it has been proposed that it was a meeting place for the town's francos, or the old palatium maior mentioned in medieval records. In 1729 Philip V granted the title of Dukes of Granada de Ega to Juan de Idiáquez, whose family lived in the palace during the 18th century.
In 1868 the building was sold to the Junta de Merindad and was used as a prison until 1954, when the Diputación de Navarra acquired it, restored it and recovered much of its original appearance. The route occupies five rooms on the first floor and several on the second, organised by theme.
