About the museum
The Museo Arqueológico de la Ciudad de Dénia was founded in 1957 and was one of the pioneering museums in the Valencian lands. It arose from the need for an exhibition space in the Torre del Consell of the castle; in 1975 the museum exhibition room opened there and, from July 1987, the museum occupied the Galería Oriental of the palace of the Duke of Lerma, high up in the castle, where it remained until December 2023.
In that month it closed in order to move the collection, temporarily, to the Casa de la Marquesa de Valero de Palma in the historic centre of the city. After 37 years in the castle, the museum opened in its new premises with a new museographic approach in October 2024.
The current exhibition, entitled “Dianium, Daniya, Dénia, una ciudad de mar estante”, traces the history of Dénia from its origins in the 2nd century BC to the 18th century and relates it to the sea. It combines staged display cases, audiovisual material and artificial intelligence features that recreate historical figures.
