Temporarily closed. The historic building in the Parque de María Luisa has been closed to the public since 12 January 2020 for a comprehensive refurbishment. About the museum

The museum was established following the 1867 decree on archaeological museums, from the Junta de Museos de Sevilla (1835) and the Comisión Provincial de Monumentos (1844). The founding collection brought together the finds from the excavations of Itálica, which Francisco de Bruna had gathered around 1780 in the gallery leading to the Reales Alcázares. Its first home was the Alcázar itself and, from 1875, the former convent of La Merced, where it opened in 1880.

The lack of space was resolved when, in 1941, the City Council ceded the Pavilion of Fine Arts of the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition, a work by Aníbal González in the Parque de María Luisa. The new venue opened on 25 May 1946, and the building and collections were declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1962. In the 1970s it was expanded to the current 27 rooms, and in 2012 a monographic room devoted to the Carambolo was added.

On 12 January 2020 the museum closed to the public to begin a comprehensive refurbishment of the pavilion. Its holdings, more than 60,000 pieces owned and on deposit, are meanwhile stored at the Centro Logístico del Patrimonio Cultural in San José de la Rinconada.
