About the museum
The museum's origins lie in the Provincial Monuments Commission, which founded a painting museum in 1845, opened in November 1846. In 1895 the commission decided to create an archaeological museum, which was established in 1896. From 1904 it was housed in the Provincial Instruction Centre; a fire in 1927 damaged part of the collection and of the building; and from 1951 it occupied the former Episcopal Palace, now an Asset of Cultural Interest.
At the beginning of 2002 the historic building closed to the public for complete refurbishment, and the museum's services moved to the Santa María de Europa building, where most of the collection is kept. Since 2006 a selection of sculpture has been displayed in the former convent of San Francisco.
The collection is primarily archaeological, with particular strengths in Castro culture and epigraphy, but it also includes fine arts, decorative arts and documentation. In the Sala San Francisco, the exhibition “Escolma de Escultura” offers a chronological route from Prehistory to the Early Modern period with pieces in stone, bronze and wood: the menhir-statue of Pedra Alta from the Bronze Age, the triskel of Castromao, the Tábula de Hospitalidad of Castromao, the Mercury of Vilar de Barrio and the 17th-century choir panels from the Monastery of Santa María de Montederramo.
