About the museum
The museum is in the former railway station of Santa Cruz de Arrabaldo, on the outskirts of Ourense. It is one of the buildings that INORDE, a body of the Diputación de Ourense, is bringing back into use as exhibition spaces as part of the project “Estaciones Vivas” (Living Stations). It shares the building with the Museo Estanislao Reverter and the Centro de Interpretación del Lino (linen interpretation centre).
Its collection is part of the Centro de Cultura Popular Xaquín Lorenzo and consists mainly of the traditional costumes that the Escuela Provincial de Danza Castro Floxo has been recovering over the years, material that represents a distinctive part of Galician ethnography.
The first room displays costumes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries from different social classes, from formal dress to the work clothes of farm workers; some pieces are originals and others faithful reproductions. The second room explains how linen and wool fabrics are made, from the raw material and the preparation of the thread to work on the loom, with a wide range of materials. Information panels accompany both spaces.
