About the museum
The Museo Municipal de Ourense occupies a Renaissance manor house from the 16th and 17th centuries, owned by the Méndez Montouto family, which was adapted as a museum in 1987. The original building retains its stone facade and a column with a lintel at the entrance. It is on rúa Lepanto, in the old town, near the cathedral.
The museum houses the art collection of the Concello de Ourense, with contemporary Galician painting and sculpture by artists such as Prego de Oliver, Trabazo, Cándido Fernández Mazas, Nelson Zumel, Xaime Quessada, Carlos Vello, Vidal Souto, Rafael Úbeda and Bóveda. The first two floors were mainly used for temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
The upper floor shows the permanent collection of the Ourense engraver Julio Prieto Nespereira, with 54 unpublished works in drawings, oils, watercolours, inks and gouaches, as well as sketches for magazines such as “Blanco y Negro” and “La Billarda”, studio notes and caricatures, including one of his friend Vicente Risco. The museum is currently temporarily closed to the public.
