About the museum
The museum occupies the Claustra Nova, the unfinished Gothic cloister of Ourense Cathedral, a church built between the second half of the 12th century and the first half of the 13th century. It opened in the mid-20th century to bring together and display the liturgical and artistic heritage of the cathedral.
It has two rooms and holds liturgical objects, vestments, sculpture and religious painting. Among the best-known pieces are the casket of Santa Eufemia, the Misal Auriense of 1494, considered the first printed book in Galicia, a processional cross attributed to Enrique de Arfe, and the Limoges enamels of a 12th-century chest. The treasure of San Rosendo, from the monastery of Celanova, is also kept here.
Entry to the museum is through the Patín Juan de Austria, and the admission price includes a visit to the rest of the cathedral.
