About the museum
The Sistema Museo Berrocal brings together in Villanueva de Algaidas the spaces dedicated to the sculptor Miguel Ortiz Berrocal (1933–2006), who was born in this town in Málaga province. Berrocal studied Exact Sciences in Madrid and attended the Escuela de Artes y Oficios. Between 1954 and 1964 he lived and worked between Rome and Paris, then settled in Verona. In 2004 he returned to Andalusia to build his studio-workshop and supervise the works of his museum. His work is known for its dismountable, transformable and often combinable sculptures.
The studio-workshop shows the creative process behind these pieces: a selection of sculptures, mainly from his early period, the mechanical workshop where the prototypes were made, and the artist's personal studio, which holds his library of more than 5,000 volumes and a collection of multiples. The house museum reveals the more intimate side of his life and a collection of works by 20th-century artists who were friends and contemporaries of Berrocal. For now it is only opened for visits in connection with an event or a lunch.
Visits are always guided, last between one and two hours and require a booking.
