About the museum
The Museo del Anís de Rute occupies the distillery of the Duende family, which began in 1908 as a small family factory producing anís and liqueurs. In 1993 Anselmo Córdoba turned the former factory into the first thematic museum on anís in Spain, with the aim of recovering the legacy of the more than one hundred distilleries that had operated in Rute since 1630.
The route passes through ten rooms of the complex. These include the still room, with two hammered copper stills, one from the 19th century and one from the mid-20th century, which are still preserved; the maceration room, with glazed clay jars and more than 750 pieces, including bottles, advertising items and utensils from the town's distilleries; the women's room; the former loading bay and factory dispatch area; and a multi-purpose room. The museum is one of the rooms registered in the Andalusian Museums Register.
The visit is completed by the brandy cellar of 1908 and by the Patio con Duende, a traditional house with a kitchen, bedrooms, a carriage room, pools and numerous plants, which has won several courtyard competitions.
