About the museum
For centuries Vilviestre del Pinar was a village of carters. The Real Cabaña de Carreteros dates from the time of the Catholic Monarchs and came to involve almost the whole population: in the 15th and 16th centuries the village had more than 300 carts, and in the mid-18th century it had 392. The carters transported timber for large buildings and ships, salt and war supplies, and travelled with their carts as far as Palencia, Valladolid and Burgos to exchange timber for grain.
The museum preserves this tradition in a space within the Mesón-Restaurante El Molino. It brings together objects and tools that show the hard life of the sierra's carters: a cart about 150 years old with wooden wheels, a pitch kiln, a forge and a farrier's frame (potro de herrar). It was created to mark the fifth centenary of the Real Cabaña de Carreteros.
