About the museum
La Casa Roja is an early 20th-century neoclassical mansion with red façades and white balustrades, in the old town of Villa de Mazo, on La Palma. The building was once a hotel and is popularly known as La Casa Roja. Today it houses the municipal museum over two floors.
The ground floor houses the Corpus Information Centre, which presents the Corpus Christi festival of Villa de Mazo and is described as the only museum in Spain dedicated to this celebration. The festival, declared of National Tourist Interest, is known for the arches and carpets that each neighbourhood makes from natural materials, and its origin dates from around 1605. Documents, photographs and illustrations accompany displays of these decorations.
The upper floor is the Embroidery Museum, dedicated to this local craft. It displays Richelieu embroidery (called here “rechi”), realce (raised work) and punto perdido, together with other traditional stitches used in costumes, tablecloths and church ornaments. Next to the building is also the Rose Marie Dähncke Mycology Centre.
