About the museum
The museum was founded in 1983 on the initiative of a group of residents of A Fonsagrada with the aim of preserving and sharing collective memory. The board (patronato) was legally established in 1984 and at one point had some 200 members; today it consists of eight members, including the mayor and the councillor for culture.
Until 1992 it occupied a wing of the former municipal schools. When that building was scheduled for demolition, it passed into private ownership as a closed warehouse. In 1995 the new municipal government offered a former dispensary of 700 m², and the new facility was completed in autumn 1998. In 2010 two of the three floors were refurbished.
The ground floor covers beliefs, the altarpiece (retablo), the wine cellar, the forge, the hearth, oil, the pig slaughter (matanza) and a soft-drinks factory; the first floor covers traditional crafts and rural life; and the second floor covers architecture and archaeology, with a traditional house, the Castañoso castro (hillfort) and its “sauna”, megalithic and Roman remains, threshing, mills, hórreos and slate.
