About the museum
The Museo de Archena opened in 2011 in a modern building beside the River Segura and near the Cabezo del Tío Pío, one of the best-known Iberian sites in the area. It has four interconnected rooms, with large glass walls that keep visitors in touch with the landscape of the Ricote valley.
Rooms 2 and 3 house the permanent exhibition. Room 2 traces local history from prehistory to the Late Middle Ages: the Chalcolithic, Iberian culture, the Roman period, the late Roman and Visigothic world (with the Llano de los Morenos) and the Islamic period. Room 3 tells the story of Archena up to the present day, with the War of Independence, the modernisation of the 19th century, the painter Inocencio Medina Vera, the poet Vicente Medina, the Civil War and the canning industry. Room IV is devoted to temporary exhibitions and Room I to projections and activities. The museum also displays a replica of the Iberian Vase of the Warriors; the original is kept in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional.
