About the museum
The Museo del Esparto y Antigüedades occupies a room in the Palacete de Villa Rías, in the centre of Archena. The palacete was commissioned in the last third of the 19th century by the Vizcondes de Rías (Viscounts of Rías) as a country retreat; it is surrounded by a garden of around 5,500 square metres.
The collection brings together esparto objects, a fibre whose use, according to some studies, dates back to prehistory in the Region of Murcia and which the Romans promoted as an industry. It also shows models of Archena’s monuments, such as the Castillo de Don Mario and the church of San Juan Bautista, and huerta tools, such as a trillo (threshing sledge) and a pozo murciano (traditional Murcian well).
