About the museum
The museum opened on 23 December 2013 in the Casa de la Inquisición, an 18th-century manor house in the centre of Ojós, in the Valle de Ricote. The building was restored in 2010 and retains on one of its façades the coat of arms of the Marín y Melgarejo family, who held government posts in the village in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The collection comes mostly from the nativity-scene holdings of the Museo de Bellas Artes de Murcia (MUBAM), owned by the Autonomous Community, to which municipal pieces are added. It brings together more than 800 sets and continues to grow through donations; some 260 are on display, almost all dating from between 1970 and 1990, with a few pieces from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since 2015 it has been part of the Sistema de Museos de la Región de Murcia.
The ground floor houses the reception, an audiovisual room, toilets, workshop rooms and rooms for temporary exhibitions. The upper floors hold the permanent exhibition, arranged by continent (Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania), with figures showing costumes, trades and landscapes from different countries.
