About the museum
The Museo de Arte Ecuestre opened in 2005 within the premises of the Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre in Jerez de la Frontera. It is devoted to the art of horsemanship, its study and its dissemination, and it aims to show its evolution from its origins to the present day with a variety of resources that can be enjoyed with all five senses.
The core of the museum occupies the basement of the Recreo de las Cadenas, a 19th-century building designed by the French architect Charles Garnier. Its eleven rooms trace the origins and history of equestrian art and of the horse in Andalusia and in the world: from the archaeological remains of the Iberians and Tartessians around the Guadalquivir and medieval cane games (juegos de cañas) to the Renaissance escaramuza displays, the country tradition of the garrochistas and the rejoneadores, and the systematisation carried out by the Real Escuela in the 20th century, inspired by the great European schools.
The visit includes other spaces that complete the experience: the reception centre with a cinema room, the saddlery (guarnicionería), the guadarnés where the harnesses for the displays are kept, the covered riding arena (picadero), the stables, the botanical garden and the Recreo de las Cadenas itself. The rooms cover, among other topics, the history of the Real Escuela, the exercises of high school (alta escuela), the professions of the horse world, the evolution of the horse, mythical horses and the disciplines of the equestrian world championships.
