About the museum
The Museo del Enganche opened in 2002 in a wine-cellar complex from the early 19th century on Calle Pizarro, known as the former Pemartín cellar. It belongs to the Fundación Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, which manages the building, and presents itself as the only museum where carriages, harnesses, horses and riding dress can be seen together.
Its aim is to make known and keep alive the tradition of carriage driving (enganche) by combining a rich material heritage with new technologies. The route begins in the main hall, which houses carriages from the 19th and 20th centuries alongside high-quality harnesses and other driving equipment. It continues through the stables, where the Real Escuela's horses can be seen, and the work area, where it is shown how the animals are groomed and harnessed and how the carriages are cared for.
An audiovisual installation between the stables and the work area follows the daily life of the horses over twenty-four hours. The Bodega Guadarnés 1810 hosts temporary exhibitions with more pieces from the collection, and a permanent collection of riding dress is displayed in the building's former distillery.
