About the museum
The Museo del Belén de Jerez brings together the heritage of the city's nativity tradition, whose association of nativity-scene makers was founded in 1976. After several years in which it opened only for occasional activities, the town council and the Asociación de Belenistas de Jerez signed an agreement in November 2023 for its permanent opening. The museum depends on Fundarte, and the association lends the exhibition material. It reopened permanently on 1 December 2023.
The route begins in the foyer with the altarpiece “Belenes Soñados”, made up of picture-nativities with biblical scenes in which local elements such as the vine and a catavino (a traditional wine-tasting vessel) appear. The main room is dominated by a columnar nativity, open on four sides and made by several artists, surrounded by dioramas by various nativity makers. The multipurpose room displays the set “Tiempo de Navidad” and hosts the association's activities and workshops.
The monumental nativity in Hebrew style, with six scenes and polychrome terracotta figures by the craftsman Pedro Ramírez, is one of the most outstanding pieces. Figures by internationally recognised craftsmen are displayed on the staircase, and on the first floor are the dioramas devoted to Saint Francis of Assisi and the large Neapolitan nativity, twelve metres across the front.
