About the museum

The Museo de Arte Sacro de Tineo is housed in the parish church of San Pedro in the town of Tineo and holds a large collection of wood-carved images from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque. The preservation of this collection in a rural setting so far from central Asturias is due to the efforts of successive parish priests and of the museum's promotion committee, made up of local residents, the Asociación Conde de Campomanes, the Asociación astur-galaica del Interior de Amigos del Camino de Santiago and the Ayuntamiento de Tineo.

The collection illustrates the arrival and assimilation of Romanesque art in western inland Asturias and traces its development into the Baroque. Among the most outstanding pieces are the Virgen de Bebares, from the 12th century, the Calvario de Pozón, from the late 13th century, and several popular images of Saint James as a pilgrim from the 15th century, which reflect Tineo's position on the Camino de Santiago. The finest works are displayed alongside simpler ones, grouped by theme.

As well as statuary, the museum preserves sacred goldsmiths' work (chalices, pyxes, candelabra, ciboria and processional crosses), liturgical vestments and sacred ornaments, and a bibliographic collection with editions dating from 1522. It is arranged in the Sala-Tribuna, the Sala de Orfebrería Sacra (sacred goldsmiths' work), the Sala de Imaginería del siglo XVI (16th-century statuary) and the Sala de Imaginería románica (Romanesque statuary), which holds 28 carvings. The visit is made with a guide.
