About the museum
The Museo Prerrománico de San Martín de Salas opened in June 2019, promoted by the Fundación Valdés-Salas. It occupies the former chapel of the Palacio de los Valdés Salas and holds the carved pieces and inscribed gravestones from the church of San Martín, located about 800 metres from the village.
The church was built between the 8th and 9th centuries and was rebuilt on 12 October 951, according to an inscription on the south wall that mentions the priest Adefonsus confessus; a later epitaph records his death in 969. The church was largely remodelled at the end of the 15th century and was declared a national monument of artistic and historical interest on 3 June 1931.
The 10th-century pieces had been reused in the church walls. In 1980, during a restoration, two workmen removed them without supervision and damaged them, and then waited for a permanent location. Today they are displayed in the museum, while full-scale replicas occupy the positions the originals had in the church.
