About the museum
The vaqueiros de alzada are an Asturian cultural group whose main activity was transhumant livestock farming. Their pastoral life, transhumance and isolated habitat explain the clashes with the farming villagers known as xaldos, and the friction with civil and ecclesiastical authorities.
The museum, in the parish of Naraval (Tineo), is organised in two settings. The first is a complex of house, granary and hayloft from the late 18th century in the Barzaniecha neighbourhood, restored following the building methods of vaqueiro houses of the late 19th century. It has a kitchen with a hearth and wood-fired oven, a bedroom with cradles and bunk beds, and a granary for storing grain. An annex building houses a restoration workshop, toilets and an audiovisual room with panels, photographs, videos and traditional music.
The second is a late 18th-century house in the Folgueras del Río high pasture, also in the parish, preserved in its original state. It is divided into a stable and a dwelling and shows how life was lived in a very small space, with a bed, a hearth and a bench.
