About the museum
The Las Ayalgas de Silviella museum grew out of the passion of Ángel Menéndez Rubio, an industrialist who for about forty years recovered old objects to give them back their use. It all began with a Biscúter, a micro-car from the 1940s, and the collection grew with other cars, tractors, motorcycles, household appliances, agricultural machinery and documents until it exceeded a thousand pieces.
The museum occupies the former warehouses and workshops that Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico used in the late 1950s to build the Miranda power station; they had previously been used in the construction of the Grandas de Salime hydroelectric scheme. The building was completely restored in 2018, respecting its façade, glazing and structure.
The exhibition, of more than 2,000 square metres, is spread over five rooms. It includes vehicles and motoring, a forge, agricultural machinery, a soda-water factory, mills, a spelt-husking mill (pisón de escanda), clocks, a grand piano from 1850 and a torture chamber. The pieces are restored so that they work, and they are started up regularly. The museum also has a restoration workshop and a café.
