About the museum
El Museo del Bosque, in Muñalén (municipality of Tineo), about 3 km from Navelgas, is an open-air museum with an educational purpose. It shows the balanced relationship that the people of these valleys maintained with the forest for centuries, from which they obtained fuel, fruit, timber for building houses and making furniture, and tools for an almost self-sufficient way of life.
The route crosses a 3-hectare forest along a 1 km trail, past traditional structures and devices such as the toxar, the carbonera (charcoal kiln), the xoxa, the panera (granary), the cortín, the molino (mill), the caleiro (lime kiln), the batán (fulling mill), the mazo and the arietes, and with renewable energy installations (a wind generator, a micro hydro turbine and solar panels). A permanent exhibition brings together objects made of chestnut, oak, ash, birch and hazel wood, tools for working it, and carvings such as chests, coffers, sculptures and clocks.
It is a living forest that needs constant care: felling, pruning, thinning, sowing, grafting, clearing and fertilising take place mainly in winter and early spring, which is when booking a visit is recommended.
