About the museum

The museum opened on 26 June 1980, the result of the initiative of Carmina Useros Cortés and Manuel Belmonte González, who had been gathering pottery from Spanish workshops since 1973. To finance the building, use was made of the founders’ own heritage, donations from private individuals and residents, fundraising at cultural events and a bank loan; part of the support came in kind, such as roof tiles, bricks and cement.

The building, designed by Carlos Belmonte, was constructed from scratch in a style suited to its surroundings, with white walls and wooden doors and windows. Inside, six open rooms at different heights allow the pieces to be grouped by province. The Asociación Museo de Cerámica de Chinchilla has managed it from the outset, with the collaboration of volunteer members.

The collection brings together about 2,000 pieces from 576 Spanish potteries, some of which have now disappeared, with good representation of the workshops of Albacete and especially of Chinchilla. Utilitarian forms predominate, such as botijos (earthenware water jugs), cántaras (pitchers), tinajas (large storage jars), alcuzas (oil cruets), pucheros (cooking pots), jarras (jugs) and lebrillos (earthenware basins), as well as roof tiles and bricks. The museum also displays photographs of traditional potters who worked at the wheel until only a few years ago.
