About the museum
The Museo Comarcal de Hellín was created in 1995 as the archaeological and ethnological museum of the district, with holdings from surveys, excavations and deposits from the Museo de Albacete. It occupied a late 19th-century Modernist manor house in the historic centre.
Its collections are now displayed in the MUSS, the Museo de Semana Santa y Tamborada “Rafael Sánchez Hortelano”, located on the Plaza de la Iglesia. The building was designed by the firm Exit-Architects, has 2,160 m² of exhibition space and combines avant-garde architecture with the recreation of part of the façade of the Casa del Conde de Lumiares, one of the town’s most important ancestral homes.
The route devotes its rooms to the tamboradas and to the processions of Holy Week in Hellín, with sculptural groups and floats (pasos), documentaries, interactive screens, a projection room inside a giant drum and a recreation of a sculpture workshop. The museum also holds more than three hundred archaeological and ethnographic pieces from the district, among them prehistoric and Neolithic finds from the Fuente de Isso and Pedernaloso, and objects from the Bronze Age and the Phoenician, Iberian and Roman periods.
