About the museum
The museum has been linked to the Instituto Padre Suárez since its origins and was conceived as a space for teaching activity. The institute opened in 1845 and the museum occupies part of its basement. Most of the natural history collections were brought together in the 19th century by the teacher Rafael García Álvarez, who held that books alone are not enough to teach.
In the 1990s the teacher Luis Castellón Serrano obtained the west wing of the basement to display the holdings, and the museum opened to the public in 1995 to mark the 150th anniversary of the institute.
It now has eight spaces, seven of which are open to visitors. Rooms I to VI mainly show natural history collections, with some elements of agriculture, geography, mathematics and French. Room VI displays the anatomical models of Dr Auzoux. Room VII, dedicated to Professor Martínez Aguirre, houses physics and chemistry apparatus and instruments.
