About the museum
The museum is housed in the Ermita de los Tres Juanes, a building erected in 1941 on the Cerro del Castillejo at the entrance to Sierra Elvira. The hermitage was dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, Saint John the Baptist and Saint John of God, but it never had a religious use. It was restored in the 1990s and turned into a sociocultural centre; it retains a Mudéjar coffered ceiling and is a local landmark that appears on the municipal coat of arms.
The natural sciences museum brings together collections of geology, palaeontology, botany and zoology, with minerals, ornamental stones, rocks, fossils and marine molluscs. The building also has an audiovisual room.
According to the museum directory of the Junta de Andalucía, the museum is currently listed as temporarily closed. No reopening date has been published.
